The Montana Department of Justice’s Motor Vehicle Division (MVD)
received an extension from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, for the implementation of the federal identification law, REAL ID. The
extension expires January 8, 2019. During this time, Montana drivers’ licenses
are accepted by the Transportation Security Administration to board domestic,
commercial flights and access federal facilities. If Montana does not receive another extension, starting January 8, 2019, travelers with a Montana driver license or identification card must have an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel to board their flight.
