Airport Milestones

Overview 

  • 1920s - 1930s - Much of the runway construction work was done with horse drawn equipment.
  • 1929 - First telephone installed.
  • 1933 - First Federal grant ($47,000) for Airport improvements.
  • 1934 - Current road bed to Airport (North 27th Street) constructed.
  • 1935 - U.S. Post Office Auxiliary at Airport.
  • 1937 - Large NWA hangar constructed.
  • 1938 - First field lights.
  • 1942 - Control Tower constructed.
  • 1955 - Present ILS Runway 10/28 constructed.
  • 1958 - New Terminal Building occupied (this is the core of the present building).
  • 1960 - New FAA Control Tower constructed.
  • 1960 - First air carrier jet aircraft lands at Logan Field (NWQ DC-8).
  • 1965 - Air Force Dispersal Base constructed.
  • 1967 - Major reconstruction of ILS Runway 10/28.
  • 1971 - Airport renamed Billings Logan International Airport.
  • 1972 - Terminal facility undergoes major expansion.
  • 1974 - Wide body DC-10 service begins.
  • 1975 - Airport Department becomes a totally financially self supporting operation. No taxpayer funds are used for the support of the facility. The operation is totally funded by the revenues generated on the facility.
  • 1975 - Air Force turns over dispersal base facilities to City.
  • 1979 - Extension of Runway 10/28 to 10,500 feet.
  • 1980 - Executive Hangar site created.
  • 1983 - Significant Master Planning effort undertaken.
  • 1984 - Major improvements made to ILS Runway 10/28.
  • 1985 - Staging underway to put badly needed facilities in place during the next 10-20 years.
  • 1989 - Constructed new general aviation crosswind Runway 7/25 and a new hangar site capable of accommodating 100 plus hangars.
  • 1990-1992 - Terminal Building expanded to current size. New Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting and Airfield Maintenance Building constructed west of Terminal. New 890-stall parking lot constructed in front of Terminal Building. Total investment in these improvements was $16,000,000.
  • 1998 - Major improvements made to ILS Runway 10/28.
  • 2001 - Terrorism events of 9/11 permanently altered security at airports nationwide.
  • 2002 - Transportation Security Administration (TSA) took over screening function at airports.
  • 2003 - Construction on new Air Traffic Control Tower and Terminal Radar Approach and Control Building began.
  • 2006 - New Air Traffic Control Tower completed and operational.
  • 2007 - Old Air Traffic Control Tower demolition completed.
  • 2011 - Construction completed on a new Quick Turn Around (QTA) Car Wash Facility for the on-Airport rental car operators.
  • 2015 - Construction completed on a new permit only Employee Parking Lot and new public Express Parking credit card parking lot.
  • 2016 - Upgraded Rental Car Parking Lot Lighting. New West Taxilane and Ramp constructed.
  • 2017 - Upgraded lighting in Office Building IP-9 in Airport Business Park.  Began A&E work on the Terminal Expansion Project.
  • 2018 - Purchased two new Multi-Tasking Plow/Broom snow removal vehicles.  Constructed the Airline Support Facility Building.
  • 2019 - Constructed East & West Commercial Aprons.
  • 2020 - New Security System for Terminal Building.  Completed Phase I of the Terminal Expansion Project.
  • 2019 - Groundbreaking for the Multi-million Dollar Terminal Expansion Project, rebuilding two expanded Concourses.
  • 2022 - Ribbon cutting and opening of the new Concourse A.
  • 2022 - Ribbon cutting for first bank of EV Charging Stations in the Long-Term Public Parking Lot.
  • 2022 - Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Passenger Screening Area Moves to New Location on Second Floor with Latest Screening Technology.
  • 2022 - New Food Court on Concourse level opens with triple-branded food service.
  • 2024 - Opening of the new entry lobby and relocation of the J.K. Ralston painting First Flight.
  • 2024 - Ribbon cutting and pre-opening of the new Concourse B.
  • 2024 - Completed the last phase of the Terminal Expansion Project and moved airlines into the new Concourse B.
